because of the state of my lawn as you can see in this picture
The deer are still at it and no amount of fox urine is going to help me.. here are some closeups of the damage!
I also installed all the tomato cages the way I think they should be but honestly I have no idea - this entire year is trial and error and alot of praying and waiting... here are my tomatoes in the cages:
My small flower garden is doing well also, I am glad I didn't do much more than this because I really need to focus on the vegetables
Thats all for now, I have my weekend devoted to garden and photo prep so more pics and updates this weekend.
OK, this has nothing to do with my garden... more on that tomorrow, today it
is about how I feel when I lose things and when is say lose I mean
misplace. i lost $14
and I am distraught about it
i would rather it be stolen from me
b/c when things are lost I feel like they are out there waiting to be found
but when something is stolen then it can't be found
and i feel like I have abandoned my money if I don't keep looking for it
This week I ran into my first rabbit problem! Or deer... maybe its deer. Whatever it is it ate the tops off of my vegetables including my big tomato plant, my sunflowers and my broccoli! I am not pleased and friendliness aside I would like to eliminate them! But I won't, nor will I stand idly by! I guess the following are my options.
1. Obtain a bag of human hair: The smell of humans keeps the Hare's away
- hair for a hare.
2. Various organic mixtures that you shake and they stay away - this might be a good short term plan
3. Chicken Wire Fence - cheap and easy except I need to dig a 6" ditch and then bury the fence inside of it. This could be my weekend project.
4. Fox urine or dried blood: Seriously I have no idea where to get these things, but they make the list.
OK, so I actually wrote that list on Monday - that night I went to the store and was able to by fox urine and dried blood in a compound that comes out of a squirt bottle - NICE... i put it on my Garden and its been better but last night the deer ate the top of an entire Broccoli plant - now I am not happy :(
I love weekend now that I have my garden and when one of the days each weekend is raining it leaves only one day for gardening - so I had alot to cram in today.
The first order of business was to get my trellis' and tomato cages in. My father built me these cucumber trellises
one of my tomato plants - that I had bought as a plant - already needs a cage - because it has a flower!
in other garden news i can't seem to keep my summer squash alive. I went to Flaherty's on Sunday and bought some new plants... but i hurt it when I got it transplanted I broke it - ugh!
i am not sure if they need more water or less or what I am doing wrong but I can not keep them alive i am going to have to do some research on it this week....
so the garden is looking very good! I had my first big harvest of radishes
I took my radishes over to my parents where they are building a staircase....
but thats for another day :)
in the coming weeks I will be gearing up in earnest for my year of eating locally... the full rules and regulations I will play by will be posted before the July 1st deadline but for this post I wanted to show you where I get my dairy from... not the store but the ACTUAL COWS
yep, thats them - the cows of smiling hill farm. From this farm I get my milk, cream, cheese, local beef and pork and yogurt. I can get just about everything dairy related here... the only thing they don't have is sour cream....might look into making that myself...
The cheese they make comes from their sister company
Silvery Moon Creamery
They were featured in Oprah's magazine, although I can't find the reference online. When I visited the farm this weekend to do my grocery shopping I got to talk to the goats:
