Today my dad got us down to the studs - here is how the morning started:
Turns out when the put the new windows in the left the old window weights in place - cool :)
And here is how the house was when I got home!
Tomorrow is a big day! We go buy lights and the dishwasher and some other stuff - stay tuned!
Day five went well. Dad got the bottom cabinets out and we were able to see the "real" floor. Turns out that underneath the existing linoleum is tile AND THEN there is the same hardwood floor as is in the rest of the house. For a few moments I gave some thought to adding some time and money to the project and get that floor done now! Dad talked me down off of that idea, but at some point in the future I would like to take up the 2 other floors and get to the beautiful hardwood for the entire house! The idea was appealing to me to do now because I hate moving the gas stove around and I figured if we were moving it to move the gas line then why not go for it... but ok ok. We won't do it now and when I am ready to do it maybe I can hire someone!
Here are the pics:
Demolition has started and I am reminded why I hate living like this :) I wanted to make oatmeal and couldn't find the measuring spoons. I will get used to it but it can be frustrating in the morning :)
Here is a few of where we are with the cabinet wall:
As you can see all my wall cabinets are down and I am starting to get a feel for what the kitchen will look like with those walls open.
Here is my makeshift kitchen - I am learning to love my microwave:
More to come later this week!
This Sunday I went to Lowes and ordered all of my new kitchen cabinets and my corian countertop. It was a big purchase but 2 long years in coming. When I bought this house in 2005 I said the kitchen would be the first thing I would do. I love to cook and even if you don't your kitchen is the center of your house. Well things got in the way (furnace, basement floor, my other job (bleck!)) and I am just now getting to it! I can't tell you how excited I am and how that is prefectly balanced by how much I hate living in a house during a renovation:) But blogging about it will help me to keep my eye on the prize. We have already started demoltion and working but first here are some befores:
This is the main part of the very small kitchen and the part that will see the most work. Those cabinets were built piece by piece in the 1940's when they converted this from a gas station to a house.
Artistic shot from the magnetic letters :)
This is a view into the kitchen from the living room and the reverse. That room is next :)
This is a view standing in the doorway from the living room.
This is from the sink area looking into the mud room entry way. At some point I am going to try and join the two of them with a common flooring: tile - so it looks more cohesive.
This is the refrigerator and stove area - this is gonna get some work too :)
I started my new job last week, and its not the biggest news in my lie (see next post about the renovation) but its a big deal. I absolutely love it there and will post more about all the great things later, but I will show you view from my desk.... i hid the job jackpot when they should me where I would be living :)
I have been gone a long time from this blog. The reason is I got really busy on my other blog and my garden suffered the consequences and I haven't had much to blog about. I can't save the garden. We are able to harvest some stuff out of it but it wasn't quite what I wanted. Much of my problem was time. Right now I have a 60 minute commute to a 9 hour job every day. Add my weekend photography work to that and I was not home alot. WELL THATS ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE!
I have a new job with a company that is less than 10 minutes away. In addition, its an 8 hour job not a 9 hour job - I am going to get back 15 hours a week that I lost to long day and commute - you read that right - 15 hours a week! bring on the garden next year and the photography jobs and I am ready to go!!!
in honor of my new job I bought a Coach bag. Thats right- I bought a Coach bag, and a wrist-let and a wallet! I am playing with some high rollers at my new job, bigger money, bigger jobs, nicer dress - its time to act the part. If thats the life I want I am going to start acting like I have it already :)
Here is my yummy new bag:
