Size 12:

  • Aug 20, 2008

Tonight I went into the GAP to buy a pair of black pants.  I figured it was the GAP and sizes run small and even though I have recently lost 40lbs I started at a 16 - but those were WAY to big.  So I went to a 14 but they didn't seem quite right and I thought it was just the pant lenght - but something kept nagging me so before I left the store I tried on a pair of size 12 AND THEY FIT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously I am not sure the last time I wore a size 12 ANYTHING.  Never mind that a year ago I couldn't fit into anything at the GAP!!
I am super psyched and will be sporting my new pants tomorrow!

lunch today.

Matt has been able to harvest food out of the garden every day he has been over and what has resulted in a huge pile of fresh vegetables in the entryway that we are eating our way through.  Its good to come home every night and have something fresh to eat right outside your door!

Last night he picked a bucket full of cheery tomatoes so today I am having some for lunch...

I cleaned them off at home - don't they look gorgeous!

Matt planted several Sungold Cheery Tomaso plants and they are giving me tomatoes in my favorite color - orange!

The white boat...

  • Aug 15, 2008

Earlier in August Matt and I went up to the Blue Hill/Sedgewick area of Maine to visit his grandparents.  It was a perfect weekend and on Saturday we went around shooting a bit. We obviously have tons of photos but I haven't had a chunk of time to go through and post them all but I have a few for today.  One of the places Matt and I went was to Preserve and there we found this white boat.

We spent alot of time shooting this boat, both of us trying to get better or different angles, some in black and white some in color.  It was alot of fun and I love when Matt and I go out and photograph things together.
Here is Matty in action:

I tried to capture some of the boat in black and white but I am not sure it does it justice:

Finding and shooting the boat actually turned out perfect.  Later on in the day we stopped by the Gallery of Terrell Lester where I fell in love with this photo:

I borrowed this from his website and it honestly doesn't do it justice - its just beautiful and printed using the Giclee method.  Its $1200 and I promised Matt if he ever gave it to me I would paint the entire interior of my house white just to match it (I may live to regret that).

But I am hoping that I can create a nice DIY substitue using the image of the boat.  If I add a bit of a glow to it I might just get it close!  Its not sitting on the water but I really like a monochromatic image with very little saturation - we will see!

More pictures of Blue Hill to come!  Enjoy your weekend!

How a vegan eats out of the garden

  • Aug 13, 2008

I went vegan about 11 weeks ago and since then its been a bit challenging but what has been great in recent weeks is the garden.  At night when I am not sure what to eat I just head outside and see what is ready for  pickin!  Last night it was eggplant!

Here is the beauty I ate last night next to a great vegan cookbook Matty got me because he loves me and dotes on me and is the best boyfriend ever.

I grilled them up according to the directions in the cookbook, I sliced them thin, salted them and layed them on the stone:

and then layered them with sauce and soy cheese and baked it back in the oven.  It was delicious and the soy cheese is awful on its own but great when you cook it!

Today I am taking a couple hours off of work to photograph an elopement - yay fun!

We had alot of memories here....

Not long after my parents were married they purchased a dining room table, this was 41 years ago now.  Growing up this was our dining room table, our game table, our coloring table, our sitting and visiting table, our everything table.  We didn't really have a desk in the house til I was much older so this table served as the only flat surface where things got done.  I have ALOT of memories with this table: meals, games, visiting with family, talking to my mom....

My mother has hung onto this table and brought it to Maine with her when she moved.  But the family has gotten larger.  Kim has gotten married and had 2 kids, I have Matt and sometimes Jen brings a date to dinners or family events.  It was just this past easter when I was bringing Matt and  Jen was bringing a date that we convinced my mom it was time for a new table - there was just no way for all of us to sit at a table that only seats 6 comfortably.  She was not loving the idea as my mom likes to hang onto things - but I had a perfectly good hardwood table in my basement that seats 12 just looking for a home - so we switched!  Now I have the dining room table of our childhood and she has a whole new table to make  years of memories with.  We all sit much more comfortably at meal times and we can even have more than just the 10 people that we usually have when we are full up!

As for me, well I have been working hard to refinish the table.   It takes a while to get 41 years of poly and shellac off of a pine table but I was able to get it done for the top and the fold down side pieces.  I decided to paint the bottom white.  The reason was partly because shanding down all those knoks and crannies would take another weekend (or two) and I didn't have that kind of time to spare and partly because I was interested in seeing if I liked that country look of painted bottoms and plain tops.  I am going to treat the exposed wood with tung oil over the next week or so but for now it looks like this.  Its not attached, I just set the wood on top of the legs.

I am excited to have the table, excited that I have something in my house that has all of those memories attached to it and looking forward to creating more memories on that table with family!

In a day and age where everything is NEW NEW NEW and BUY BUY BUY I think its important that we hold onto things that meant something to us, that we find new uses for older pieces and that we realize that NEW doesn't always mean BETTER.

Yesterday Matt and I had our 7 month anniversary.   I figured he was still searching for something to give me so I didn't get him anything (as usual I know what it is I just haven't picked it up yet) but when I got home last night this was waiting for me!

Downtown OOB

  • Aug 8, 2008

Every year when my mothers sister comes up from CT with her kids and grandkids we take one night and go downtown to the rides.  The rides in OOB are filled with people on vacation, tons of kids running and screaming and long lines. I go every year to take pictures.  This year Matt went with me so he could experience the full drama of it - and of course we ate every bit of junk food imaginable!

The photographic focus was on the kids.  Riley is still to small for most of the big kid rides so we started with the frog hopper.  Riley's friend Molly tried to help her up, but since they are both the same size it didn't work - but it was nice she helped

These girls ROCKED frog hopper and all of the ohter kiddy rides, they weren't that scary but made for cute pictures

Hailey LOVES the rides and rode on everything. She rode the huge swings all by herself, I was a nervous wreck and almost asked them to stop so I could get her off, but she rode it and had a permanent grin on the whole time  - she just loved them.

Here she is riding the "roller coaster" - I think she should be hanging on - and why does backlighting vex me so??

My mother and her sister.  They are going on a 1 month tour of Ireland this fall.  I wonder if they are coming back mainly because I think they will get lost, my mother says she may choose not to come back

There was a slide that Riley loved so much she made my mother go on it with her... good thing my mother is spry - they both seem to love it... strange
